Sarah Daphne McKoy

January 15, 1929 ~ October 7, 2016 (age 87) 87 Years Old

On Friday October 7, 2016, God granted a well deserving angel her wings.

Mrs. Sarah Daphne McKoy, “Daphne” as she was affectionately called was born January 15,

1929 in Lillington North Carolina to the late Paul Malachi and Maggie Elizabeth McLean

McKoy.

Daphne started school at the age of 4 and graduated from Shawtown High School in 1944. She

furthered her education attending Fayetteville Teachers College, graduating in 1949. She then

moved to Georgia and taught school for several years. She returned to North Carolina and later

attended W.W. Harding Technical Institute receiving a Licensed Practical Nurse degree. She

worked at Wake Memorial Hospital and paved the way for African American nurses to receive

employment. She also worked at Charles Parrish Nursing Home until her retirement.

Daphne joined Lillington Star Church at an early age. She was very active in many capacities to

include Sunday School, Senior Choir, Gospel Choir, New Generation Singers, Anointed

Generation Singers, Mission Department, Chairperson of the Mother’s Day committee, Pastor’s

Aide and Mother Board. Until her passing she was the oldest member of Lillington Star Church

having been a member for 75 years. She deeply loved her church and her church family.

Daphne had a passion for singing. She and her sister Annie would sing for various community

and church functions. She was also a member of various community choirs to include Al

Andrews and the Lillington Community Concert Choir and the Mixed Voices. Daphne also

possessed a helping spirit. She enjoyed helping the elderly and children in her community and

surrounding areas. She volunteered with Meals on Wheels and Harnett County Division on

Aging and Harnett County Board of Elections. She was also instrumental in the founding of the

Shawtown Alumni Association, serving as Historian for many years.

Daphne was an avid sports fan. She loved the North Carolina Tarheels, The Atlanta Braves, The

Washington Redskins and The Carolina Panthers. You would often find her watching whatever

game aired on television.

She was preceded in death by two sisters Annie McKoy McAllister and Juanellas Roberts and

one brother, Lavernie Paul Mckoy, One grandchild Lamanda Michelle Reid. She carried many

titles to include Mama, Granny, Aunt Daphne, Sarah D. and the Mayor of Shawtown. She would

call the Good Morning Charlie Show to announce everyone’s birthday. She was loved and

celebrated by many and leaves a tremendous legacy for her family to remember.

Her legacy includes her beloved family, Her devoted daughters and sons in law: Marva and

Harvey Walden of Lillington, Myra and Lamont Laster of Lillington, Myrna And Shawn Ridley

of the home and Katie Bailey of Lillington. Ten Grandchildren, Tiffany McNeill(Lonnell) of

Lillington, Osrielle Montague(Ian) of Durham, Antonio Carwell, Domerick McKoy (Crystal),

and Chelsea McKoy of Lillington, Tasha Elliott of Garner NC. Nicole Elliott of Knightdale NC,

Ricky Walden (Nicole), Alisa Walden (Donald) of Erwin and Angela Harris (Gregory) of Linden

NC 15 great grandchildren, One sister, Martha McKoy Barefield of Port Lavaca Texas, One

Aunt Mrs. .Henrietta Armstrong of Lillington, One niece, Davie Jean McKoy, Nephews, Larry

Mitchell, Wilfred Burns (Irene), Marcus Barefield (Susan), David Earl McAllister (Annette),

Paul McAllister (Joan) and Maurice McAllister. Special children: Elaine Mangum and children

Zeandrea and Victor and Anita Cates and her children Torin and Todd. Her special friends:

Mother Lela McLean and Christine Williams. Many great nieces, Great nephews, cousins and

other relatives and friends.
